Brussels, 4 June 2025 — The fifth meeting of the Rural Pact Coordination Group convened in Brussels, bringing together representatives from EU institutions, national and regional authorities, and rural stakeholders to propel the Rural Pact agenda forward. This gathering marked a key milestone in the European Union’s commitment to fostering vibrant, resilient, and inclusive rural areas.
The day opened with a comprehensive overview of the EU’s evolving rural policy landscape. A forward-looking presentation by the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) laid out a clear vision for 2040: thriving rural regions that not only retain and attract people, but also support a resilient agri-food sector, foster sustainable food systems, and promote strong rural values.
Food as a Central Pillar of Rural Development
A recurring theme throughout the day was the centrality of food to rural development. Discussions emphasized the importance of reconnecting food with tradition and seasonality, while also addressing critical social aspects such as improving workers’ rights, empowering women in agriculture, and strengthening the role of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food supply chain.
Key Policy Actions and Initiatives
The meeting also highlighted several ongoing and upcoming policy initiatives. Among these are efforts to enhance rural proofing—ensuring that EU policies consider rural impacts—an update to the EU Rural Action Plan, and the continued promotion of Smart Villages. A major announcement included the launch of a new platform dedicated to women in agriculture, aiming to elevate visibility, support, and innovation among women working in the sector.
Showcasing National Efforts and Building Awareness
Members of the Coordination Group shared progress on promoting the Rural Pact Declaration, which underpins shared principles and goals for rural development across the EU. Experiences from Czechia, Spain, and Flanderswere spotlighted, offering insights into national strategies and successful local initiatives that align with the EU-wide vision.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Cooperation
The meeting concluded with a forward-looking session on future collaboration and next steps. Participants reaffirmed their collective commitment to shaping a dynamic and prosperous future for rural Europe. The Rural Pact continues to serve as a unifying framework for aligning efforts across all levels of governance and society to ensure no rural area is left behind.
As rural communities face evolving challenges and opportunities, this fifth meeting of the Coordination Group marks another step toward realizing the EU’s long-term rural vision—where all Europeans, regardless of where they live, can thrive.
