Earlier December, the PREPARE Network embarked on a remarkable journey to Cyprus to connect with the Troodos Network, a potential new member of our organization. This trip was not just a visit—it was an exploration of Cyprus’s rich rural heritage, innovative projects, and passionate communities.
Day 1: Welcoming Troodos Network
Our visit began with a warm welcome from the Troodos Network, who introduced us to their inspiring work in the region. During an evening meeting, we learned about their projects, stakeholders, and dedication to rural development.
One highlight was our visit to the Cultural Center in Platres, a hub of history and innovation. This unique space showcases local traditions, including a section dedicated to lavender cultivation, preserving legends, rituals, and stories tied to this “purple gold.” The commitment to heritage preservation and innovation immediately resonated with PREPARE’s mission.
Day 2: Exploring Innovation and Tradition
The second day of our visit took us to Melina, the “Carob Village.” We learned about the traditional processing of carob and its potential to enhance the region’s attractiveness. Discussions about community-based organizingprovided valuable insights into hosting vibrant events and involving locals in cultural and economic activities.
A hands-on workshop, where we crafted dolls with a local artist, allowed us to experience how art and tradition play a role in community engagement. Later, we visited Prastio Avdimou, the Halloumi Village, where we explored the village’s history and halloumi-making traditions, which are deeply rooted in the region’s identity.
Day 3: The Sweet Side of Cyprus – The Honey Routes
On the third day, we delved into the Honey Routes of Cyprus, a flagship project of the Troodos Network.
- Melini: We visited a project focused on bee hotels, an eco-friendly initiative to protect pollinators and engage communities, especially children, in environmental education.
- Cyprus Honey “Όρος Μαχαιρά”: A passionate family business blending tradition, sustainability, and innovation showcased the art of honey production and its importance to the local economy.
- Ecophysis Bee & Nature Center: This family-run center in Vavla introduced us to their immersive workshops, like “Beekeeper for a Day,” combining education, tourism, and sustainability.
- Our house Vavla village: A tiny village with just 10 inhabitants, Vavla has become a model for home hospitality. A couple’s dedication to preserving local culture has transformed the village into a destination that even caught the attention of National Geographic.
The Executive Board’s Decision
During the visit, PREPARE’s Executive Board held an official meeting to review the Troodos Network’s application for membership. After thorough discussions, the Board made the decision to recommend to the General Assembly (GA) to approve Troodos Network as a member of PREPARE. This recommendation reflects Troodos Network’s alignment with our mission to foster rural innovation, community engagement, and sustainable development.
Highlights from World Mountain Day
Our visit coincided with World Mountain Day, where we had the opportunity to explore the sweet side of Cyprus, celebrating the mountains’ natural and cultural richness. From honey production to sustainable tourism, this event reinforced the importance of mountain communities in Europe’s rural revival.
